San Diego Mid-Century Modern Renovation by Silva Studios Architecture

Award winning San Diego architect Mark Silva founder of Silva Studios Architecture  recently spear headed the complete renovation of  an enchanting mid-century modern home known as the Jones House. This house rests high atop the San Diego Landmark that is Mount Soledad.  The goal of this renovation was to bring this house up to date in terms of the implementation of 21st century technology as well as update the structural integrity of the home, all while maintaing the original design aesthetic.

The house was originally designed by William Krisel. In the 1950s, 2,500 Krisel designed homes were built in Palm Springs, an act that doubled the size of the city. That is why  Krisel is most notable for popularizing as well as heavily influencing the mid-century desert modernism that can only be described as the Palm Springs aesthetic. The influences of Krisel can be seen all over California, from the  San Fernando Valley to this home in San Diego. This was not Silva’s first attempt at a mid-century modern renovation, and based on the absolutely stunning results, it certainly won’t be their last.

The Butterfly roof, one in which two gables dip at midpoint and arch upward, is a mid-century modern staple. A varying roof line creates a house that looks different from every angle.

A Historic Boston Brownstone Kitchen Gets a Modern Renovation

Boston Architectural & Interior Designer Chris Greenawalt began his design firm Bunker Workshop by completely remodeling his own kitchen after moving in to a traditional Boston brownstone. It’s a perfect way for Greenawalt to demonstrate the ideology behind his firm’s name: “The word bunker connotes images of shelter and protection – a personal place that one creates in order to escape from the chaos of outside forces.” The kitchen renovation proves Greenawalt’s ability to transform a room into a spacious, modern, and comfortable home.

An expansive island provides plenty of workspace and a partial wall and canopy help distinguish the kitchen from the living room.

A wall of Ikea cabinets blend in seamlessly with the all-white kitchen and create the perfect amount of storage space.

Greenawalt added a customized Putnan rolling library ladder in order to reach the highest cabinets. It’s a fun and unique addition to the minimal layout of the whole kitchen. The built-in spice rack adds a subtle pop of color that is both quirky and functional.

Stainless steel appliances and warm toned hardwood floors is a very modern and cozy combination.

Modern From a Historic Printer's Row Loft's Point of View in Chicago

LNM Interiors is an upbeat Chicago-based residential interior design firm that specializes in new construction, whole home renovations, kitchen and bath renovations….they excel in the softer side of interiors and have built their reputation on creating “sophisticated, timeless and modern” interiors.  Their motto is “Live. Naturally. Modern”. Lisa Natale is the principal behind LNM Interiors and has always had a love for design and the fashion industry. This passion has greatly influenced her modern interior designs with her wide usage of bold graphic patterns. She loves helping clients explore their dreams.  Below you will see LNM Interiors’ “live naturally modern” motto shining through in this fabulous historic Printer’s Row loft below…

When the firm acquired the loft project in Chicago’s historic Printer’s Row neighborhood, the client, a Chicago-based realtor, had two main objectives for the space: to maintain the historic and industrial feel of the building that was once home to a printing warehouse in the early 1900’s, and then to update the space into
something more timeless and modern.

The overall concept for the loft was to keep the architectural elements crisp and bold as a means to emphasize a more modern living space.  LNM achieved this by selecting bright white quartz countertops, white subway tiles, and accents of white leather furnishings, while contrasting these elements with ebony floors, dark mahogany cabinetry and a dark grey moiré wallpaper in the master bath. As for maintaining the history of the building, the color palette was a key element.  LNM used light greys and charcoal blues with a chartreuse accent color for an added edge. All of this, a modern interpretation of the color palette used in the early 1900’s while taking it to a more current and fresh living space. In order to connect all of the spaces in this open floor plan loft, this color palette was mimicked throughout the entire one bedroom.

Chicago-based designer strongly believes that the home can and should be the ultimate reflection of an individual’s personality. For this reason, building a relationship with her clients is paramount to understanding how a space will ultimately unfold. LNM is dedicated to making clients feel comfortable in their homes and allowing their personalities to shine through in their interior spaces.
